M.D. Mats B. Eriksson became specialist in Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine in 1984. Three years later, he presented his Ph.D. thesis, at Uppsala University, Sweden. The dissertation was based on research on fibrinolysis and its inhibition, mainly focusing on the interplay between fibrin degradation products and various inflammatory substances causing enhanced microvascular permeability. He showed that some fibrin degradation products are involved in the kallikrein-kinin system and may partly counteract angiotensin converting enzyme. The interface between hemostasis and inflammation has been one of the main topics in doctor Eriksson´s research, which is manifested in several publications on experimental septic shock.
